Biden calls for Trump to demand end to ‘siege’ on Capitol

President-elect Joe Biden urged President Trump “to go on national television now” and “demand an end to this siege” as Trump supporters smashed windows, scaled the U.S. Capitol, and roamed the halls searching for lawmakers, delaying the certification of the presidential election.

“I call on President Trump to go on national television now to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution and demand an end to this siege,” Biden said in remarks in Wilmington, Delaware, on Wednesday. “It's not a protest, it's insurrection.”

The president-elect urged rioters to abandon what he termed an “unprecedented assault” on democracy.

“The scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect a true America. What we are seeing is a small number of extremists,” Biden said.

“This is not dissent. It's disorder. It's chaos. It borders on sedition, and it must end now,” he added. “I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward.”

Turmoil erupted at the Capitol shortly after Trump finished addressing a “Save America March” on the National Mall shortly before lawmakers were set to vote to confirm Biden's electoral victory. “We’re going to walk down” to the Capitol in protest, Trump told the crowd at the time.

Biden's remarks were delayed as the protests grew violent and as lawmakers at the Capitol urged Trump to address his supporters to stand down. In interviews broadcast on cable news, many would not say where they were holding.

The Capitol was on lockdown as Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a Republican, called the swarm “a coup attempt” in a tweet.

Moments after Biden concluded his remarks, Trump released a video telling his supporters to “go home now.” In a one-minute address filmed outside the White House, Trump said that “we have to have peace.”

He added, “So go home. We love you. You're very special.”

Trump also declared himself the winner of the presidential race, an election that he said “was stolen from us.”
